Ho Chi Minh City University of Law has undergone several stages of establishment and development, marked by the following key decisions:
- Decision No. 199-QĐ/ĐT dated October 16, 1982, by the Minister of Justice: Established the Ho Chi Minh City Judicial College on the basis of the former Judicial Cadres School, tasked with training mid-level legal personnel.
- Decision No. 357-CT dated December 25, 1987, by the Chairman of the Council of Ministers: Upgraded to the Judicial University - Ho Chi Minh City Branch, under the Ministry of Justice.
- Decision No. 368/QĐ-TC dated July 6, 1993, by the Minister of Justice: Renamed the Judicial University - Ho Chi Minh City Branch to the University of Law - Ho Chi Minh City Branch.
- Decision No. 1234/GD&ĐT dated March 30, 1996, by the Minister of Education and Training: Merged the University of Law - Ho Chi Minh City Branch and the Faculty of Law, Ho Chi Minh City University, to form the University of Law under the Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City.
- Decision No. 118/2000/QĐ-TTg dated October 10, 2000, by the Prime Minister: Separated the University of Law from the Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, to form the Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, under the Ministry of Education and Training.
